Removal Procedure
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Refer to the machine Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Battery or Battery Cable - Disconnect" or the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) for the correct procedure.
If necessary, remove any panels or covers to gain access to the electric starting motor. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual or the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) for the correct procedure.
Remove the electric starting motor. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.

Flywheel ring gear replacement required
Inspect the flywheel ring gear for damage. Rotate the engine with a suitable tool to inspect the circumference of the flywheel ring gear. Compare the flywheel ring gear wear to the Illustrations below:Note: There will be a concentration of wear at 180° apart on C4.4 engines.Refer to Illustrations 1Refer to Illustrations 2Refer to Illustrations 3Refer to Illustrations 4Refer to Illustrations 5
If necessary, replace the flywheel ring gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install" for the correct procedures.

Remove stubs (2) from flywheel housing (1) that are used to retain the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.Installation Procedure
Ensure that all components are free from wear and damage.

Install new studs (2) to flywheel housing (1). Tighten the studs to a torque 18 N m (159 lb in).
Install 432-1691 Electric Starting Motor Gp (4). Install nuts (3) and tighten the nuts to a torque 44 N m (32 lb ft). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install" for further information.

Follow Step 4.a through Step 4.i to carry out the installation of the electrical connections to the electric starting motor.
Connect the harness assembly for two-pin connections (5) and to two-pin plugs (10) on the electric starting motor.
Remove nut (9). Install ring terminal for B- on the new harness assembly over the stud.
Install nut (9). Tighten the nut to a torque of 22 N m (195lb in). Ensure that the ring terminal on the harness assembly is not strained as the nut is tightened.
Cut off ring terminal on the original SW+ wire. Remove 5 mm (0.20 inch) of insulation from original SW+ wire.
Cut off ring terminal (7) from the SW+ wire on the new harness assembly. Remove 5 mm (0.20 inch) of insulation from the SW+ wire.
Position the heat shrink over the SW+ wire on the harness assembly.
Use a suitable crimp to crimp the SW+ wire on the new harness assembly and original SW+ wire.
Position the heat shrink over the crimped section of the wiring harness assembly. use a suitable heat source to shrink the heat shrink onto the SW+ wire.
