Removal Of Desiccant Cartridge
(1) Shut off the engine and drain the air system completely; be sure the lines that go into and out of the air dryer are at atmospheric pressure. Disconnect the air line from the end cover and disconnect the heater wire. Loosen the three bolts on the end cover and turn retaining clamps (1) to the side. (2) Find the notch in the dryer body. Push cover (2) up into the body. Put the blade of a screwdriver in the notch and carefully remove retaining ring (3). Remove the end cover assembly. Remove cartridge assembly (4) and desiccant plate assembly with a 3/4" (19.05) socket wrench. Be sure the desiccant plate assembly comes out with the cartridge.Disassembly Of Desiccant Cartridge
(1) Carefully remove lock nut (1) from on top of desiccant plate (2). The spring load on the plate is completely released when the nut is removed. Remove the desiccant plate. Remove and keep spring (3), spring seat, bolt and cartridge shell (4). Throw away the oil separator filters (5), two perforated plates (6) and the desiccant material. (2) Remove O-ring seals (7) and (8) from the desiccant plate and throw them away. Remove the ball check valve retainer. Remove and throw away ball check valve (9). Clean the desiccant plate thoroughly with a quality commercial solvent.Assembly Of Desiccant Cartridge
(1) Install new ball check valve (1) and install the retainer. Thoroughly lubricate new O-ring seals (2) and (3) with barium lubricant that came in the kit. Install the seals in their respective grooves in the desiccant plate. (2) Install one perforated plate (4) into the cartridge, with the felt cloth side up, and push it firmly to the bottom of the shell. Slide the oil filter separator over the cartridge bolt with the gasket surface toward the shell. (3) Install the bolt with oil separator (5) into the bottom of the shell and through the center hole of the perforated plate in the bottom of the shell. Put all of the package of dessiccant material into the shell; make sure none is lost. Handle the shell carefully so the bolt does not fall out. (4) Make the desiccant material level and install second perforated plate (4) with the felt cloth side down. Make sure the shoulder (part without threads) of the bolt is a little above the top of perforated plate (4). (5) Put conical spring (6) on top of the perforated plate with the large diameter down. Put retainer (7) on top of the spring. Install desiccant plate (8) on top of the retainer as shown. Turn lock nut (9) to pull the assembly together to approximately half of the spring's free height. At the same time, slowly turn the cartridge and hit the side of the shell with a plastic hammer. This permits the desiccant material to fall (settle) into place. Tighten the nut with a 11/16" (17.45) socket or box wrench; make sure all parts are kept in correct alignment.Installation Of Desiccant
