Illustration 3 g00826088Note: Tooling (C) should be used with the 145-8008 Axle Shaft and the 145-8009 Axle Shaft.Tooling (D) should be used with the 185-8902 Axle Shaft and the 185-8903 Axle Shaft.
Attach Tooling (C) or Tooling (D) to axle shaft (9). Refer to Tool Operating Manual, M0091691 for more information on Tooling (D).
Use Tooling (C) or Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to position axle shaft (9) for installation. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, M0091691 for more information on Tooling (D).

Stop the installation of axle shaft (9) before axle shaft (9) passes through TCS gear (11).

Use a small flat head screwdriver to rotate TCS gear (11) at the location that is indicated by the arrow. This will help to engage the splines of axle shaft (9) with the splines of TCS gear (11).
Use Tooling (C) or Tooling (D) to install axle shaft (9) into the final drive. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, M0091691 for more information on Tooling (D).Note: Do not force axle shaft (9) into position.

Use a suitable prybar to support the end of axle shaft (9) during the installation procedure.

Adjust the position of the suitable lifting device as axle shaft (9) is installed.
Remove the suitable lifting device after most of axle shaft (9) is installed.

As the end of axle shaft (9) is supported, use Tooling (C) or Tooling (D) and two suitable pry bars to install axle shaft (9). Refer to Tool Operating Manual, M0091691 for more information on Tooling (D).

Push axle shaft (9) until the splines of axle shaft (9) are fully engaged with side gear (10).
Axle shaft (9) is fully installed when snap ring (14) is in contact with the counterbore of primary sun gear (13). Refer to Detail "A" in Illustration 9.

Remove Tooling (C) or Tooling (D) from axle shaft (9). Refer to Tool Operating Manual, M0091691 for more information on Tooling (D).

Remove Tooling (B) from the final drive.

Install spring (8) and plate (7) to the back of cover (6).

Install Tooling (A) to cover (6). Attach Tooling (A) to a suitable lifting device.
Position cover (6) and the O-ring seal to the final drive. The weight of cover (6) is approximately 120 kg (265 lb).

Orient cover (6) so that hole (Y) is above plug (1).
Use bolts (5) to install cover (6) to the final drive.
Remove Tooling (A) from cover (6).

Use bolts (3) to install cover (2) and O-ring seal (4) (not shown) onto the rear axle housing.
Fill the final drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil and Screens - Change/Clean" for information on refilling the final drive.
