Install the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".
Follow the recommended procedure for removal and installation of tires and or wheel assemblies.Ensure that the machine and tire and or wheel assembly are properly supported at all times.Improper procedures that are used to remove and install tires and or wheel assemblies can result in personal injury or death.
Improper blocking of the rear axle housing can cause personal injury.The rear axle housing is made to oscillate. During removal and installation of the rear tires and rims, the rear axle housing must be prevented from oscillating.Place wood blocks between the rear axle housing and the rear main frame to prevent oscillation of the rear axle housing.
Note: The following procedure is performed on the front axle. The procedure for the rear axle is similar. Park the machine on firm level ground. Apply the parking brake and block all the wheels except the wheel that requires removing.
Raise the front or the rear of the machine until the tire and rim to be removed is just off the ground.

Place Tooling (A) or Tooling (B) under the machine in the position shown in Illustration 1.

Position Tooling (C) on the tire and rim assembly. Remove sixteen wheel nuts (1) and the washers.
Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C). Use the attached lifting device to remove tire and rim (2) from the machine. The weight of the tire and rim is approximately 398 kg (878 lb).Installation Procedure

Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C). Use Tooling (C) to position the tire and rim (2) on to the final drive. The weight of the tire and rim is approximately 398 kg (878 lb).
Apply Tooling (D) to the threads of the studs prior to installing nuts (1). Install the sixteen washers and the nuts that hold tire and rim (2) to the final drive. Tighten wheel nuts (1) in a cross pattern to a torque of 430 60 N m (320 45 lb ft).
Remove Tooling (A) or Tooling (B) .End By: Remove the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".
