Operation Description:If the magnet drops material sporadically, there may be a current overload situation from the generator. Refer to the Electrical Schematic, KENR8247.In order to lift material, the following circuits must be working properly:
The engine
The generator
The grapple/magnet switch
Hydraulic lockout leverThe possible causes of this problem are listed below:
There was a current overload condition and the generator control has shut off.
There is a ground fault in the cables of the boom that lead to the magnet.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: Before you proceed, the load on the magnet must be released, and the machine must be parked in a safe position. The engine must be switched off. After the load is released and the machine is safe, move the hydraulic lockout lever to the unlock position. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Do not start the machine. Verify that the grapple/magnet switch is in the MAGNET position.Test Step 1. CHECK FOR EXISTENCE OF ET DIAGNOSTIC CODESCheck for the existence of diagnostic codes.Expected Result:Diagnostic Codes are present. Results:
YES - Diagnostic Codes are present.Repair: Refer to "Diagnostic Trouble Code Procedures" in this manual.STOP
NO - Diagnostic Codes are not present. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK GENERATOR ROTATIONCheck if the generator stops turning when the machine drops a load. Results:
YES - The generator stops turning when the machine drops a load. Proceed
NO - The generator does not stop turning when the machine drops a load. The ECM may have failed.Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM must be replaced, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". Repeat the check of the Diagnostic Codes.STOPTest Step 3. -GND and +GND FAULT Check for ground faults. Results:
YES - There is a ground fault.Repair: Refer to Fixes in Troubleshooting Manual.STOP
NO - There are no ground faults. Repeat the check of the Diagnostic Codes.STOP
