Correctly stopping the diesel engine will allow some of the hot areas in the engine to gradually cool, thus extending engine service life. The correct diesel engine stopping procedure is as follows:1. After the normal load is removed allow the engine to idle five minutes with the accelerator at half engine speed position before stopping.2. Reduce the engine speed to low idle for thirty seconds.3. Stop the engine while it is running at low idle by lifting the accelerator past the low idle position. Do not accelerate the engine speed above low idle before stopping the engine.If the tractor must stand without shelter, cover the exhaust pipe (including starting engine exhaust pipe if so equipped) to exclude rain or snow.The exhaust pipe should also be covered when the machine is being transported with the engine stopped.If the temperature is below freezing or if freezing weather is expected before the engine will be started again, check to see that the system is adequately protected against freezing. The disconnect switch is provided for four reasons. First, to prevent actuating the starting motor accidentally. Second, to prevent damaging the electrical system when performing service operations on the equipment. Third, to prevent discharging the batteries when the machine is not in operation. Fourth, to prevent unauthorized starting of the machine.
