Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
Remove the boom cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Remove" in this manual.

( 1 ) If the Wolff Hydraulic Cylinder Repair Stand is not available to disassemble the boom cylinder, consult the Caterpillar Service Technology Group.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Position the boom cylinder in Tooling (A). The weight of the boom cylinder is 180 kg (400 lb).
Remove eight socket head bolts (3) that hold head (4) to cylinder assembly (12) .
Use Tooling (B) to slide rod assembly out of cylinder assembly (12) .
Remove ring (9), seal assembly (8) and ring (7) from piston (6) .
Use Tooling (C) to remove locknut (5) that holds piston (6) to rod assembly (2).
Remove stop (10) and seal ring (1) from rod assembly (2) .
Slide cylinder assembly (12) onto rod assembly (2). Install eight socket head bolts (3) that hold head (4) to cylinder assembly (12). Pull cylinder assembly (12) and head (4) away from the rod assembly. Remove head (4) from cylinder assembly (12) .
Remove O-ring seal (13) and backup ring (14) from head (4). Remove retaining ring (15) and sleeve bearing (16) from head (4). Remove lip seal (20), backup ring (19), U-cup seal (18), and buffer seal (17) from head (4) .
Remove two lip seals from the pin bore in the end of rod assembly (2). Remove sleeve bearing (11) from the pin bore in the end of rod assembly (2) .
Remove two lip seals from the pin bore in the end of cylinder assembly (12). Remove sleeve bearing (21) from the pin bore in the end of cylinder assembly (12) .
Start By:
