Schematic of the harness codeThis diagnostic code is recorded when the Power Train Electronic Control Module (ECM) does not receive the harness code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System (ECM) via the CAT Data Link.The CAT Data Link is an input and an output of all electronic control modules. The CAT Data Link is designed to enable communications with all electronic control modules and service tools. The CAT Data Link is not a visible component. The CAT Data Link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0967 FMI 09 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:The harness code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System is not available. The Power Train ECM will not allow the machine to start. The Power Train ECM will not allow the machine to shift. The Power Train ECM will not allow the parking brake to disengage.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
Verify whether the following part numbers are correct:
Part number of the Power Train ECM.
Software part number for the Power Train ECM.
Part number of the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.
Software part number for the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.Note: Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the correct configuration for the machine.Expected Result: All part numbers are correct.Results:
YES - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - All part numbers are not correct. One of the electronic control modules may have the wrong part number and/or the software configuration is not correct.Repair: Replace the incorrect ECM and/or the appropriate flash file needs to be flashed into the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" and Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". STOPTest Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Inspect the machine harness connections that are related to the CAT Data Link. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.
Check the mating of the connector.
Check the wires at the connector.
Check each wire for nicks and/or signs of abrasion in the insulation.
Check for moisture at the connector.
Check for dirty contacts and/or corroded contacts.
Check each pin and check each socket.Expected Result:The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.Results:
YES - The machine harness connectors are tight and the connectors are free of corrosion. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The machine harness connectors require repair.Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Verify that the repair corrects the problem.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES
Ensure that all electronic control modules that use the CAT Data Link are connected.
Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
