Startability will be improved at temperatures below -18 °C (0 °F) from the use of a jacket water heater or extra battery capacity.When No. 2 diesel fuel is used, the following items provide a means of minimizing starting problems and fuel problems in cold weather: engine oil pan heaters, jacket water heaters, fuel heaters and fuel line insulation.Use the procedure that follows for cold weather starting.
The governor control needs to be in the LOW IDLE position if the temperature is below 0 °C (32 °F).
Do not operate the glow plugs for more than 60 seconds at one time. Damage to the glow plugs could occur.
Turn the keyswitch to the HEAT position until the glow plug indicator lamp illuminates.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the electric starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.
Turn the keyswitch to the START position.
When the engine starts, release the keyswitch.
If the engine does not start, release the keyswitch and allow the starter motor to cool. Then, repeat steps 2 through step 4.
Allow the engine to idle for 3 to 5 minutes, or allow the engine to idle until the water temperature indicator begins to rise. The engine should run at low idle smoothly until speed is gradually increased to high idle. Allow the white smoke to disperse before proceeding with normal operation.
Operate the engine at low load until all systems reach operating temperature. Check the gauges during the warm-up period.
