The fuel tank on certain 559C, 579C, 2384C, and 2484C Knuckleboom Loaders may internally rust or corrode. If rust or corrosion occurs, the in-line fuel filter and ELP may experience shortened life due to the corrosion flaking off and restricting the filter.Solution
All knuckleboom loaders have Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) oil sprayed in the fuel tanks to prevent rust. When a dealer receives a machine, the tank should be filled with fuel immediately. If the dealership does not fill the tank with fuel immediately and plans to store the loader until sale, then storage procedure for Caterpillar products should be followed. Refer to SEHS9031 for storage procedures for Caterpillar products. If a fuel tank is found to have rust or corrosion, the dealer should review and perform the dealer best practice for removing the rust or corrosion. Refer to M0088398 for the process for removing rust from the fuel tanks.
