Do not perform any procedure outlined in this publication or order any parts until you have read and understood the information contained within. This Special Instruction provides the necessary information required to fabricate any reinforcing plates and to repair any cracks that occur in the welded joint between the boom side plates.Reference: Service Manual, Parts Manual and Caterpillar Service Welding Guide, form SEBD0512.Welding Requirements
Weld quality is critical to the success of this repair. Welds should be as smooth and continuous as possible. All electrodes must be completely dry.Do not weld in areas where there is air movement or in temperatures below 15.5°C (60°F).Cleaning Requirements
All foreign material such as grease, water, paint, dirt and scale must be removed before welding. These materials can discharge gas when they come in contact with heat. This gas can cause porosity (very small bubbles) in the weld deposit.Remove all oil and grease with solvent. Remove paint, rust, dirt and scale with a brush, grinding or buffing, or by blasting with glass beads.Cracks
No cracks are permissible. If cracks are suspected, the part should be thoroughly cleaned and checked.Dye Penetrant is one acceptable method to use in determining if a crack exists. X-Ray or Ultrasonic methods are also acceptable methods to use to check for cracks. X-Ray and Ultrasonic methods are more involved and would require more sophisticated equipment to perform the checks. The cracks are repairable and should be ground out or removed with a Air Carbon Arc Torch. The entire crack should be removed.Parts Needed
Reinforcing plateFabricate two reinforcing plates. Use 10 mm (.39 in) thick mild steel (A36 or A42) plate.Repair Procedures For Cracks
Location of possible cracks.1. Use Dye Penetrant, X-Ray or Ultrasonic to check for cracks.2. Completely remove all paint, moisture, oil and other foreign materials from areas to be repaired.3. Use an Air Carbon Arc Torch or a grinder to remove cracks. In detail B blend weld at corners of reinforcing plate and lower (or upper) plates. Fill corner with weld and grind surface smooth.4. Position the reinforcing plates on each side of the boom.5. Tack weld the reinforcing plates to the side plates. The maximum clearance between the reinforcing plates and the side of the boom is 1 mm.6. Finish welding the reinforcing plates to the boom side plates.7. When welding is completed, remove slag, apply rust preventative and paint.
