If the points that are described in ""Inspection of the Alternator"" do not rectify the fault, refer to ""Test Procedures"" for the specific fault.Note: When performing any diagnostic checks a good ground must be used to prevent an incorrect diagnosis. Determine a good earth. Use an area on the body of the alternator that is free from corrosion or paint. Alternatively, you can use a part of the body of the application that is free from corrosion or paint.Test Procedures
The Alternator is not Charging, the Tachometer has a fault
Stop the engine.
Disconnect the battery. Remove the connections from the B+ terminal (1) .

Identify the B+ terminal (1) on the rear of the alternator.Note: The back cover and terminals may vary in appearance. However, the B+ terminal assembly and the procedure for the correction of the alternator is common with all types of alternator.

Remove the connections from the B+ terminal in order to reveal the lower B+ terminal nut (2) .

Typical exampleNote: Ensure that the lower nut (3) is installed correctly. If the lower B+ nut (3) and collar assembly (4) is not secure the alternator may fail to charge, or the tachometer output may fail.Note: In illustration 3, the alternator cover has been removed for clarity. It is not necessary to remove the cover in order to tighten the lower B+ terminal nut.
Tighten the nut (2) to a torque of 4 to 5 N m (35 to 44 lb in).
Install the connections to the correct torque. Tighten the connections for the B+ to a torque of 7 N m (62 lb in). Tighten the connections for the D+ terminal to a torque of 3.7 N m (33 lb in). Tighten the connections for the W terminal to a torque of 3.7 N m (33 lb in).
Reconnect the battery. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Battery - Replace".
Run the engine. Check that the alternator is charging. Check that the reading on the tachometer is correct. The alternator should charge between 13 and 15 volts for a 12 volt system and 26 to 30 volts for a 24 volt system. This voltage is measured between the B+ terminal and the body of the alternator.
