Information:
Gasket kits are convenient items to have in a service shop. They eliminate part number research time, reduce clerical work, and lessen the chance for assembly errors. But, in some cases, service personnel are disappointed, either because certain gaskets were not included or several gaskets were left over in the kit after repairs. To avoid this, Caterpillar urges everyone to understand the consist list of each gasket kit before it is ordered. This is necessary to determine what each kit contains. This information is covered in two sets of microfiche which are automatically updated every 60 days and included as part of the NPR library.
1. Gasket Kits usage information - two fiche. One contains industrial engine and generator set engine information and the other vehicular engine information. Instructions for proper use of these microfiche are included on the first few frames of the fiche. (See Illustration 1).
Illustration 1. The Gasket Kit Usage Information fiche.2. B/M (Bill of Materials) Gasket Kits - four fiche. The gasket kits are listed in part number sequence listing the contents of each kit. (See Illustration 2.)
Illustration 2. Bill of Material Gasket Kit fiche. The gasket kit usage information fiche classify the kits by engine location: 1) Upper structure, 2) Upper, central and lower and front structures, 3) Rear structure and water pump, and 4) Engine and transmission oil cooler, brake oil cooler, engine oil lines, fuel system, air compressor, fan drive and front/rear take-off within these classifications. Gasket kit part numbers are listed on the microfiche according to machine model, machine serial number, engine arrangement number and engine serial number. The machines are listed in ascending order by machine size -- that is, D3 through D10 Tractors, then No. 12 through No. 140 Motor Graders through the complete product line.
You must know the machine model, machine serial number, engine arrangement number and engine serial number to obtain the number of the needed gasket kit. Locate the machine model on the microfiche. Next, match the machine serial number with the corresponding engine arrangement and serial numbers. See Illustration 3. Find the correct classification, and then check the B/M Gasket Kit fiche to determine the exact contents of each kit. See Illustration 4.
The following list shows where the kits are used in the engine, kits currently available, and what each kit contains.
Upper Structure
1. CYLINDER HEAD KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks required to assemble an engine from the top of the cylinder block up. Kit does not include gaskets for installation or repair of attached components or any precombustion chamber gaskets or shims.2. WATER COOLED MANIFOLD AND DRY MANIFOLD GASKET KITS - gaskets and seals for manifold engines. If enough parts are needed a separate kit will be made for engine manifolds and the kit part numbers will appear in the manifold columns. If not, the necessary gaskets and seals will be included in the complete cylinder head kit.
