--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------There are several different causes of excessive (more than normal) oil consumption. One possible cause is overfilling (oil level that is too high). If excessive oil consumption is caused by overfilling, the oil consumption rate will return to normal when the volume of oil in the system has decreased to the correct level.
To prevent overfilling, it is important that the "full" mark on the oil level gauge give an indication of the correct volume of oil needed for the engine.
The procedure which follows and the capacities in the chart can be used to make sure the "full" mark on the oil level gauge is in the correct position.
1. Drain the oil and remove the oil filters. Permit the engine to drain for at least 15 minutes. If the engine has auxiliary filters, remove the filters and disconnect the oil lines. Put a plug in the open ports.2. Install new filters.3. Add the volume of oil shown in Column A of the chart.4. Start the engine and operate it long enough to fill the internal passages and filters with oil.5. Stop the engine and let the oil drain back into the oil pan for at least 15 minutes. Check the level of the oil on the gauge.If the gauge mark is correct, the oil will be at the "add" mark. If it is not at the "add" mark, make a new mark at the location of the oil level in the engine
When the oil level is checked, install the gauge into the guide tube the same way each time the oil level is checked.6. Add the volume of oil shown in Column B of the chart. Check the level of the oil shown on the oil level gauge. The correct position is at the "full" mark. If it is not at the "full" mark, make a new mark that is the same as the oil level in the engine. On engines with auxiliary filters, install the auxiliary filters and connect the oil lines. Do Step 7.7. Start the engine and operate it long enough to fill the oil passages and filters with oil. Stop the engine and let the oil drain back into the oil pan for at least 15 minutes. Check the oil level on the gauge. Add oil as necessary so that the oil level is at the "FULL" mark on the gauge. Make a note of the amount of oil that is added.8. Put a 2W9223 Crankcase Oil Capacity Decal on the engine valve cover near the oil fill cap. Mark the appropriate refill capacity on the decal by punching a hole in the box next to the correct oil capacity. See the illustration. Put a note next to the decal which gives the additional amount used in engines with auxiliary filters (see Step 7).Remanufactured 3208 Engines with reference Serial Numbers 32Y1-68440, 40S1-Up, 79V1-6965 and 90N1-44127 have refill capacities of 13 liters (14 qt) when full.
