Remove the Axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove". The information is in this manual.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove two of bolts (2) from the wheel assembly. Install two 5/8" - 11 NC guide bolts (1) in the bolt holes. Remove two bolts and install Tooling (A), as shown.

Attach a chain and a hoist to Tooling (A). Remove the remainder of the bolts that secure the final drive to the wheel assembly. Use two 1/2" - 13 NC forcing bolts (3) in order to separate the final drive from the wheel assembly.
Use the hoist in order to remove the final drive from the wheel assembly and the guide bolts. The weight of the final drive is 56 kg (124 lb). Remove the forcing bolts from the final drive.

Use Tooling (B) in order to pull the ends of snap ring (5) together. Remove ring gear (4) from the hub assembly. The weight of the ring gear is 16 kg (35 lb).

Remove O-ring seal (6) from final drive (7) .
