PRIORITY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR INSTALLING THE JAM NUT ON CERTAIN MECHANICAL HOE COUPLERS
MODELS INVOLVED - CERTAIN 428F, 432F, 434F, AND 444F BACKHOE LOADERS

The jam nut for the detent mechanism needs to be installed on the mechanical coupler installed on the products listed below. The existing detent locking mechanism can loosen without the jam nut installed. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Cat dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
If you are no longer the owner of this product(s), please contact your local Cat dealer so that our records can be updated. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 05May2015 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
Before beginning any repairs park the machine in a safe working area on level ground. Ground all implements to guard against any unintended movement. Remove any work tools from the coupler before beginning the Rework Procedure. Refer to the machine Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional safety requirements before making any repairs.
1. Remove the ball plunger and and rotate the hex ball until the groove is visible through the threaded hole where the ball plunger was removed.
2. Rotate the hex ball 1/12th turn in either direction. This ensures the ball plunger is setting on a cylindrical surface not a detent. Refer to Image1.2.1.

3. Reinstall the ball plunger into the threaded hole and tighten it so the plunger is bottomed out (ball is fully compressed). Refer to Image1.3.1.

4. Loosen the ball plunger 90 to 100 degrees. Refer to Image1.4.1.

5. Install the jam nut on the ball plunger. Refer to Image1.5.1.

6. Hold the ball plunger in place with an allen wrench in order to tighten the jam nut to 30 N.m (22 ft lb) or by rotating the nut 1/6th of turn once contact is made. Refer to Image1.6.1 and 1.6.2.

7. Rotate the hex ball to ensure it rotates properly, a click is heard when the ball plunger settles into each detent. Refer to Image1.7.1.
