Use Tooling (E) to tighten bearing nut (11). Install Tooling (H) on the axle housing. Place a torque wrench on the bolt at the center of Tooling (H). The torque wrench reading is equal the preload rolling torque plus the actual seal drag torque. Use the seal drag torque that was recorded in Step 10.Note: The preload rolling torque is 7 to 13 N m (62 to 115 lb in) above seal drag torque.

Use the torque wrench to rotate the axle housing assembly. Use Tooling (E) to tighten nut (11). The torque wrench reading must equal the axle bearing preload rolling torque plus the actual seal drag torque. Use the seal drag torque that was recorded in Step 10. Use the following formula to calculate the required torque wrench reading. This formula is used to measure torque at the bolt circle.Actual Torque= C x (A + B) / B"C" is the torque wrench reading."B" is the length of the torque wrench."A" is the bolt circle radius of axle housing assembly (2)."SDT" is the actual seal drag torque.
The axle shaft should have zero end play. If the axle bearing preload rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off bearing nut (11) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (12) against bearing nut (11). Perform Step 11 again.
The following steps are for the assembly of planetary carrier assembly (5):

Install retaining ring (3) in the carrier.

Apply a thin coat of clean SAE 30 oil on all parts of planetary carrier assembly (5).
Install bearing (10) in planetary gear (9).
Install thrust washers (8) and planetary gear (9) in planetary carrier assembly (5).

Install shaft (7) in carrier assembly (5). Make sure that the spring pin hole in shaft (7) is aligned with the spring pin hole in carrier assembly (5). Install a new spring pin (6A) and (6B) through carrier assembly (5) and shaft (7).
The openings of spring pin (6A) and spring pin (6B) must be 180 degrees away from each other. The openings of spring pin (6A) and spring pin (6B) must be parallel to the deck plane of carrier assembly (5).
Drive spring pins (6A) and (6B) to the depth of dimension (X) for proper engagement. The dimension (X) is 20.0 1.0 mm (0.79 0.04 inch). Refer illustration 14.
Repeat Steps 13.b through 13.g for the remaining two planetary gears.

Use Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to position planetary carrier assembly (5) into the axle housing assembly. The weight of planetary carrier assembly (5) is approximately 80 kg (175 lb).
Use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (3) on axle shaft (4).

Remove axle housing assembly (2) from Tooling (B). Install the other half of the axle housing assembly on Tooling (B) in a vertical position.
Apply Tooling (J) on the mating surfaces of axle housing assembly (2) and of the differential housing.
