Numerous inputs from the ECM monitor the machine condition. Two types of inputs exist. One type of input is a switch input. The other input device is a sensor. Switches and harness wiring provide signals to the switch inputs of the ECM (including open circuit, short to +Battery and short to ground). Sensors provide a constantly changing signal to the sensor input of the ECM.Outputs
The ECM responds to inputs by sending electrical signals through various outputs. The outputs can produce one of the following results:

Provide information to other devices.

The J1939 (CAN) data link is required for communication with other ECMs as well as instrument clusters and other devices that use this communications protocol. The J1939 data link is bidirectional which allows for sharing of information.The CAT Data Link is used to communicate with a service tool and is also bidirectional.
