Check all the O-ring seals for wear or damage and replace if necessary.4. Put slack adjuster (3) in position on the manifold. Install two bolts (4) and the washers. Connect left and right side brake supply tubes (2) and supply hose assembly (1) to slack adjuster (3).5. Remove (bleed) the air from the brake system. Refer to the topic "/Removing Air From Hydraulic Brake System" in the Systems Operation Testing & Adjusting, 769D Truck, 771D Quarry Truck Air System & Brakes module, SENR8616.End By:a. remove body retaining pinsDisassemble & Assemble Slack Adjuster
Start By:a. remove slack adjuster The disassembly and the assembly of the slack adjuster is the same for both sides of the slack adjuster. For simplicity, only one side is shown for disassembly and assembly. Repeat the procedures for the remaining side of the slack adjuster.
Typical Example1. Remove fitting (2) from slack adjuster (1).
There is spring force against housing (3). When housing (3) is unscrewed from base (4), the spring force will be released. To prevent personal injury, retain housing (3) by hand as it is slowly being removed from base (4).
2. Place slack adjuster (1) in a soft jawed vise as shown. Use Tool (A) to remove housing (3) from base (4). 3. Remove spring (5) from housing (3). Remove O-ring seal (6) from base (4). 4. Remove piston assembly (7) from housing (3). 5. Use Tool (B) to remove retaining ring (8) from piston assembly (7). 6. Remove piston (9) from piston assembly (7). 7. Remove piston (10) from piston (9). Remove springs (12) and (13). Remove ring (11) and the two O-ring seals from piston (10). Repeat Steps 2 - 7 for the other side of the slack adjuster. The following steps are for the assembly of the slack adjuster. Make sure all parts are clean and free of all dirt or foreign material. Put clean SAE 10W oil on the O-ring seals and the pistons. 8. Replace the O-ring seals on piston (10) if worn or damaged. Install ring (11) on piston (10). Install springs (12) and (13) in piston (9). Install piston (10) in piston (9). 9. Install piston (9) in piston housing (7). 10. Use Tool (B) to install retaining ring (8). 11. Install piston assembly (7) in housing (3). 12. Install O-ring seal (6) in base (4). Install spring (5) in housing (3). 13. Use Tool (A) to install housing (3) on base (4).14. Repeat Steps 8 - 13 for the other housing (3) of the slack adjuster. 15. Install fitting (2) in the slack adjuster.End By:a. install slack adjuster
