Install bevel gear (19) onto the differential. Apply Tooling (M) to the threads of bolts (18). Install bolts (18) and tighten bolts (18) to a torque of 180 N m (133 lb ft).
Illustration 22 g01076707
Install sleeves (3) into the central housing.Note: If the axle is equipped with brakes, use Steps 24 through 28.
Illustration 23 g01076712
Position brake cylinders (1) on a flat surface. Use Tooling (G) and install bearing cups (15).
Illustration 24 g01076744
Use Tooling (A) and install spanner nut (14).
Illustration 25 g01074096Note: Check the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. If necessary, replace the O-ring seals.
Install O-rings (9) and (11) onto actuation pins (10). Install actuation pins (10) into piston (5). Install plugs (8). Apply a light coat of grease onto O-ring seals (9) and (11).

Apply Tooling (N) to the mating surfaces of the center housing and the right brake cylinder (1). Align the location marks that were made during the removal procedure. Position brake cylinder (1) onto the center housing and install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 79 N m (58 lb ft).
Illustration 28 g01076754
Install the differential into the left side of the center housing.
Illustration 29 g01074031
Apply Tooling (N) to the mating surfaces of the center housing and the left brake cylinder (1). Align the location marks that were made during the removal procedure. Position brake cylinder (1) onto the center housing and install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 79 N m (58 lb ft).
Oscillate the pinion shaft and use Tooling (A) to advance the spanner nuts until there is slight backlash with no end play.
Install a dial type torque wrench onto the pinion shaft. Measure the total rotating torque. Use the following formula in order to calculate the total rotating torque (TRT): P equals the rotating torque that was measured in Step 13. TRT = P + 4.43 N m (39.0 lb in) to P + 4.98 N m (44.0 lb in).
If, the total rotating torque (TRT) is less than the specified amount tighten both spanner nuts equally. If the total rotating torque (TRT) is greater than the specified amount, loosen both spanner nuts equally. Be sure to maintain slight backlash.
Illustration 30 g03386391
Mount Tooling (P) onto the center housing with Tooling (R), as shown. Measure the backlash between the pinion and the bevel gear. The proper backlash setting is 0.180 to 0.230 mm (0.0071 to 0.0091 inch).
Illustration 31 g01029595
If the backlash is not within the specification, retract one spanner nut and advance the opposite spanner nut equally. If the backlash is less than the specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (A). If the backlash is greater than the specified amount, move the bevel gear in Direction (B).
