Remove bolt (3) and the washer. 4. Remove impeller (4) from the water pump housing with tooling (A). 5. Remove seal assembly (5). Remove ring and seal (6). 6. Remove the bolt and washer that hold gear (7) on the water pump shaft.7. Remove gear (7) with tooling (B).8. Remove the bolts and retainer (9).9. Remove O-ring seal (8). 10. Remove shaft (10) and the bearings as a unit.11. Remove bearing (11), spacer (12) and bearing (13) from shaft (10).12. Remove the lip-type seal from the gear side of the water pump. Remove the ring and seal from the impeller side of the water pump.Assemble Water Pump (Industrial And Marine Engines)
1. Use steel wool to remove deposits or corrosion from the pump shaft. Some corrosion and/or deposits on the pump shaft, where the carbon seal assembly and ceramic ring meet, is normal and does not require replacement of the shaft. Replace the shaft only if pitting, corrosion or scoring can provide a path for coolant to leak between the seal and the pump shaft.
Do not use any sandpaper that will leave visible scratches on the pump shaft.
2. A polished area on the water pump shaft indicates a carbon seal assembly has been spinning on the shaft. Before installing a new seal assembly, use a fine grit sandpaper to clean the polished area.3. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the water pump shaft and the ceramic ring seal counterbore in the pump housing. 4. Install seal (1) as shown with tool (A). Lubricate the lip of seal (1) with clean engine oil or glycerine. 5. Install bearing (4), spacer (3) and bearing (5) on shaft (2). 6. Install shaft (2) into the pump housing.7. Install retainer (7) and O-ring seal (8) on the pump housing.8. Install gear (6) and the washer and bolt that fasten gear (6) to shaft (2). Tighten the bolt to a torque of 205 25 N m (150 18 lb.ft.).
The carbon seal assembly must rotate with the water pump shaft. Do not use any lubricant, except clean water or coolant, that will reduce the friction between the seal and the shaft.
9. Immerse the carbon seal assembly in clean water or coolant. Avoid contaminating the seal "faces" with any grease or oil. Also, avoid stretching the rubber of the seal during installation. Stretching the seal will reduce the service life of the seal.10. Use tooling (B) and hand pressure to install rubber seal (9) and ceramic ring (10) as a unit into the pump housing bore. Make sure the identification marks (holes or groove) on the ceramic ring face are installed toward the inside of rubber seal (9).11. Remove the spring from seal assembly (11). Use tool (B) and hand pressure to install seal assembly
