3116 (8WL, 2CW),
3126 (1WM, 4ES) Hydraulically Actuated Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI) Truck EnginesThe lubrication system refill quantities specified in the Operation And Maintenance Manual, 3116 (8WL, 2CW) and 3126 (1WM, 4ES) Truck Engines, SEBU6885, prior to the July 1997 issue are not correct. The earlier manuals incorrectly stated that: * The refill capacity for engines equipped with an 115-4170 Oil Pan Assembly (stamped steel, shallow oil pan) was 21 L (22 qt).* The refill capacity for engines equipped with an 119-3030 Oil Pan (early cast aluminum, deep oil pan) was 31 L (33 qt).
These capacities did NOT take into account the amount of oil contained in the HEUI hydraulic system. The new refill quantities have been reduced to allow for the oil [approximately 3.3 L (3.5 qt)] retained in the HEUI hydraulic system. It is recommended at the next oil change interval to drain and refill the oil pan with the quantity of oil identified in the chart titled "3116 HEUI And 3126 HEUI Engine Lubrication System Capacity (Approximate)" that follows in this article. The dipstick must be recalibrated.
A higher than normal oil level in the engine may result in one or more of the following problems: * Excessive oil mist (sometimes called "oil carryover") in the breather fumes.* Elevated oil temperatures.* Aeration of the engine oil, which may result in low or erratic engine oil pressure.* Aeration of the oil in the hydraulic system, which may result in low power complaints.* HEUI high pitched squeal.
The HEUI high pitched squeal has been eliminated in some cases by reducing the oil level, and this is recommended prior to installing the orificed jumper tubes (they may not be needed in all cases). Normal blowby in a new 3116 or 3126 engine has been established as 1.2 times the engine horsepower (at full rated load and speed as measured on a dynamometer) = Blowby in cubic feet per hour. See Truck Engine News, March 1996, Page 1, "Possible Sources of High Crankcase Blowby From Breather Tube". For Example: 1.2 times 200 hp = 240 cu ft/hr. Anything higher than twice this figure is cause to investigate.
It is important to distinguish between the volume of blowby and the amount of oil mist contained in the breather fumes. An engine may be well within the specification on the volume of blowby, but have excessive oil mist.
Engines with auxiliary oil filters will require additional oil. * LUBERFINER (R) 500C - Add 9.5 L (10 qt).* LUBERFINER (R) 750C - Add 13.25 L (14 qt).
(1) Shallow oil sump. (2) Deep Oil sump.To determine the oil change interval, refer to the Oil Change Interval graph in the Maintenance Section of the Operation And Maintenance Manual, 3116 (8WL, 2CW) and 3126 (1WM, 4ES) Truck Engines, SEBU6885.
