Since the Solar Controllers keep the batteries charged and the Mesh Access Points powered ON, the operation of these devices is crucial. The follow things should be verified:
This step will require a visit to the solar panels and battery box. Ensure that you follow the site-specific proper safety requirements to enter the field. Get a volt meter and open the battery compartment of the solar panels. First, visually inspect the batteries for obvious defects. Next, using a volt meter check the charge on the batteries. The batteries are optimally charged if the volt meter reads 12 VDC 0.5 VDC. If the voltage is not within specifications refer to the owners manual of the solar controller.
All lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which can burn the skin and clothing. Always wear a face shield and protective clothing when working on or near batteries.
Batteries give off combustible gases which can explode. A spark can cause the combustible gases to ignite. This can result in severe personal injury or death.Ensure proper ventilation for batteries that are in an enclosure. Follow the proper procedures in order to help prevent electrical arcs and/or sparks near batteries. Do not smoke when batteries are serviced.
Batteries should be serviced by personnel that are knowledgeable of batteries and the precautions that are required for the safe handling of batteries. Keep unauthorized personnel away from batteries. When the time comes to replace the batteries, use the same model and the same manufacturer of the original batteries.Note: Always recycle a battery. Never discard a battery. Return used batteries to an appropriate recycling facility. The following precautions should be observed when you are working with batteries:
Remove watches, rings, or other metal objects.
Use tools with insulated handles.
