3 1 465-8142 Service Kit Caterpillar recommends that both current and new installations be inspected for properly implementing the following guidelines, critical to turbine air starter system health:
Use a y-strainer with 300 mesh (40 micron) screen upstream and as close as possible to the air starter pressure regulator.
Minimum of two feet length piping between the regulator and starter.
Piping system must be flushed with air prior to being connected to the air starter; for both new installations and after any time maintenance is performed.
Recommend water trap(s) to be located upstream of the y-strainer and drained/inspected on a daily basis.
Air dryer recommended to be installed between air compressors and air storage tank.
Lubricator is not to be used with a turbine air starter.
Recommend that the air storage tanks be located as close to the engines as feasibly possible to minimize the length of piping between tanks and air starters.Reference: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9365, "Air Starting Motor"The serviceable parts for 533-5902 Service Kit are listed in Table 2.
