HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM SCHEMATIC
1. Left side hydraulic steering cylinder. 2. Steering system section hydraulic pump. 3. Hydraulic oil supply tank. 4. Right side hydraulic steering cylinder. 5. Control valve. 6. Control valve spool. 7. Washer. 8. Retainer. 9. Inner spring. 10. Outer spring.This machine has a variable ratio modulated steering system. The modulated steering gives the operator good control with slow turning which is essential when operating the machine either in close quarters or for on-highway traveling. With this system the operator can also make fast turns when necessary.The steering and scraper system hydraulic pump is a two section vane type and is driven by the torque converter oil pump drive gear. The steering system section pump (2) supplies the pressure oil to control valve (5) and then to the left side and right side hydraulic steering cylinders (1 and 4). Control valve spool (6) is directly connected, by levers and links, with the steering wheel. The spool can direct the pressure oil, in the control valve, to either the rod end of the right and head end of the left steering cylinder or the rod end of the left and the head end of the right steering cylinder to steer the machine.The steering wheel, when rotated in either direction, moves spool (6) in control valve (5). The spool is centered in the control valve by springs (9 and 10). As the steering wheel is rotated, the spool first compresses inner spring (9) for slow turning, then by rotating the steering wheel further, washer (7) and retainer (8), on the spool, compresses the outer spring (10). The increased resistance to rotating the steering wheel, when both springs are being compressed, is evident to the operator as the steering wheel moves the spool to the fast steering position.Control Valve
The steering pump supplies pressure oil through line (5) to port (8) in the control valve. When control valve spool (1) is in the center position, the pressure oil moves flow control valve (9) to open the holes in the valve to oil drain port (10). Oil from the drain port flows through drain line (2) back to the hydraulic supply tank.

Pump oil supply line.Rotating the steering wheel clockwise a few degrees for a slow right turn, moves spool (1) into the control valve enough to allow the pump oil from port (8) to flow through the narrow slots (7) into steering cylinder passage (16).
