Information:
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Adding coolant to an overheated engine could result in damage to the engine. Allow the engine to cool before adding coolant. If the machine is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with freezing temperatures, the cooling system must be protected to the lowest outside (ambient) temperature. The engine cooling system is normally protected to a minimum of −29°C (−20°F) with Caterpillar Antifreeze, when shipped from the factory unless special requirements are defined.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Excessive additive (greater than the recommended 6% initial fill) together with concentrations of antifreeze greater than 60% cause deposits to form and can result in radiator tube blockage and overheating.
Note: This procedure pertains only to Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC). This procedure does not pertain to machines that are shipped from the factory with Extended Life Coolant (ELC) and machines that are maintained with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).Reference: For all cooling system requirements, refer to Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations, SEBU6250, "Cooling System Specifications".Use the 8T-5296 Test Kit in order to check the concentration.Add Coolant Additive (If Required)

Lift the lever on the pressure cap slowly to relieve cooling system pressure. Remove the pressure cap.
Drain enough coolant from the radiator to allow for the addition of the liquid supplemental coolant additive. Note: Make sure that the coolant is drained into a suitable container.
Add liquid supplemental coolant additive (conditioner) according to the requirements of your cooling system as determined by the coolant additive concentration test.
Clean the pressure cap and inspect the pressure cap. Install the pressure cap.
Start the engine and check for leaks. Allow the coolant level to stabilize.
If necessary, add premixed coolant in order to bring the coolant to the proper level in the sight gauge. Change Coolant Conditioner Element (If Required)

Loosen the pressure cap slowly to relieve cooling system pressure. Remove the pressure cap.
Close element inlet valve (1) and outlet valve (2). Remove and discard element (3).
Clean the element mounting base. Make sure all of the old seal is removed.
Replace with a new maintenance element.
