PROBLEM
Edges of the oil hole in the crank and pin bores of the rod are deburred during the machining of the rod prior to the installation of the pin bushing. In some cases, burrs have not been completely removed from the edges of the hole and those burrs can break loose during engine operation causing rod bearing damage or failure. In other cases, the rigid edge of the oil hole damages the pin bushing when inserted and creates debris in the hole.
ACTION REQUIRED
1. Inspect the package date code label on the outside of the box of all 10R4029, 10R9224, 10R9258 and 10R9257 cylinder packs and 230-2516 and 10R4030 connecting rods in dealer parts stock. The first nine characters of the date code indicate the Day, Month, and Year. Determine if the date code is prior to M03D30Y11 (March 30, 2011).
- If the date code on the package IS prior to M03D30Y11 (March 30, 2011), proceed to Step 2.
- If the date code on the package IS NOT prior to M03D30Y11 (March 30, 2011), mark the outside of the package to indicate it has been inspected according to this program, PI7####, and return to dealer parts stock. No further action is required, the part may be used "as-is".
2. Dealers with ability to inspect the inventory with a boroscope that has a 4.7mm lens (or comparable) through the oil passage, proceed to Step 3.
Dealers without the ability to inspect the inventory with a boroscope that has a 4.7mm lens (or comparable) to fit through the oil passage, remove the part from dealer parts stock.
3. Inspect cylinder packs and connecting rods with a boroscope with a 4.7mm lens (or comparable) to fit through the oil passage. Image1 shows a boroscope view of the debris in the hole. Image2 illustrates a rod being inspected with a rigid lense. Flexible lenses also can be used.
-If no debris is present at the top of the oil passage, the part is acceptable to use. Mark the outside of the package to indicate the part has been inspected according to this program, PI7####, and return to dealer parts stock.
-If debris is present at the top of the oil passage, remove the part from dealer parts stock.
