Remove the valve cover base.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.
Turn OFF the fuel supply to the engine.

If necessary, remove tube assemblies (4).
Remove bolts (2), elbow (3), the gasket, and the O-ring seal.
Remove bolts (5), manifold (1), and the gaskets.
Illustration 2 g02031207Note: If necessary, use Tooling (B) to rotate the camshafts in order to allow removal of the rod assembly.
Remove bolt (7) and the cap. Remove rod assembly (6).

Remove bolts (9) and disconnect manifold (8) from the cylinder head. Remove bolts (10) and disconnect elbow (11) from the cylinder head.
Remove the gaskets when the cylinder head is removed.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (13). The weight of cylinder head (13) is approximately 45 kg (100 lb).
Remove bolts (12), bolts (14), and cylinder head (13).
Remove the spacer plate, the gasket, and the O-ring seals.
