Information:

Engines effective with 47B311 are equipped with new open impeller type turbochargers which require cleaning only when the turbocharger is disassembled. Earlier engines may also be equipped with these turbochargers, which can be identified by the one-piece center housing. On earlier engines equipped with original, unconverted turbochargers, deposits of foreign material which gradually accumulate on the turbocharger compressor impeller must be removed periodically. Excessive deposits will flake off, impairing the balance of the impeller and possibly resulting in serious damage. The service intervals at which cleaning is necessary will depend upon operating conditions, but the impeller should be inspected at least every 500 service hours. If any unusual sound, such as an abnormal squeal, is heard in the turbocharger, stop the engine at once. Check for excessive clearance in the turbocharger bearings and clean the impeller if noticeable deposits have accumulated. If the bearings permit more than a perceptible movement of either or both ends of the rotating assembly which consists basically of the impeller, turbine and shaft, or if squealing persists after cleaning, see your Caterpillar dealer.Since a small amount of water may enter the crankcase during the cleaning process, it is advisable to perform this maintenance just before a crankcase lubricating oil change period if possible.Equipment for cleaning the turbocharger impeller is available from your Caterpillar dealer at nominal cost. The following cleaning procedure is recommended.1. Remove the air inlet and outlet piping from the compressor housing (1).2. Working through the inlet opening (2), use a toothbrush or similar small, stiff bristled brush to clean the dirt from the impeller (4) and housing. Care must be taken to avoid nicking or scratching the impeller.3. Assemble the hose on the adapters using hose clamps (7), and install the elbow adapter (8) in the compressor housing inlet. If turbocharger cleaning is to be carried out in dusty surroundings, a length of flexible hose should be used between the air cleaner and the diesel engine inlet manifold to prevent dust laden air from being drawn into the diesel engine.4. Mix no more than one gallon of clean water with one cup of a low-sudsing, household detergent. Pour this mixture into the end of the hose (5). The mixture may be allowed to run into the compressor housing before installing the end of the straight adapter (6) in the compressor housing outlet (3).5. Start the diesel engine and operate at high idle speed for ten minutes. Avoid placing any load on the engine during this cleaning cycle. Flexible hose should be handled carefully to prevent snagging or damage to the hose.

Stop the engine and remove the elbow adapter from the inlet side of the compressor housing. Carefully inspect the impeller for cleanliness. If not clean, brush loose any remaining deposits. Restart the engine and operate at high idle speed for five minutes. This inspection and cleaning procedure should be repeated until the impeller is
