3508 EUI: ECAP "Display Events" Screen Programming New Electronic Control Modules
The Electronic Control Module or ECM is the heart of the Electronic Control System used on the 3508 EUI Engine. You should be aware that the ECM has no moving parts, has a very high reliability rating and can be time consuming to replace. Most failures occur in wiring and connectors, sensors or fuel injectors. Be sure to follow the troubleshooting procedures outlined in this guide. Be certain that you will be fixing the customers problem before replacing the ECM.The parameters stored in the ECM to be replaced, must be read on an ECAP and recorded. The Personality Module must be removed from the old ECM and installed in the new ECM. After the new ECM is installed on the engine, the parameters recorded from the old ECM must be programmed into the new ECM and the Injection Timing must be recalibrated. The following procedure is a summary of the basic steps necessary to program a replacement ECM. Step 1:Use a copy of the "3508 EUI Read/Change Parameters Worksheet" to record the Parameters from the ECM being replaced.A. Use the ECAP to access "Parameters" from the ECM being replaced.B. Record the "Parameters" listed on the worksheet. Step 2:Replace the faulty ECM. Step 3:Install the Personality Module into the ECM making sure it seats properly into the Personality Module Socket (white EPROM carrier socket). DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE TO PUSH IT INTO THE SOCKET. The socket is keyed to accept the Personality Module (see embossed "WHITE" on bottom) in one position only. A "Click" can be felt when the Personality Module is pushed in correctly. Install the Personality Module access cover back onto the ECM. Make sure the O-ring seal is seated properly.
Improper O-ring placement could result in moisture damage from improper sealing.
Specified torque for the four (4) Personality Module cover bolts is: 1.36 N m (12 lb in).
Do not over tighten bolts! This could result in damaged threads and moisture damage from improper sealing.
After tightening the Personality Module Cover bolts put a lockwire through two adjacent bolts. Install a governor seal.Read "Read/Change Parameters" (see Section 2: Programming 3508 EUI Parameters).
After installing the ECAP and Communication Adapter tool turn key ON (engine off) and wait one minute. The ECM may need to do some internal "reprogramming" failure to wait one minute before starting engine could prevent completion of programming.
Step 4:Program the 3508 EUI Read/Change Parameters. Use the "Read/Change Parameters" Menu item to:Enter the: Full Load Setting, Engine Serial Number, and the Vehicle ID recorded in Step 1. Enter the FRC Parameters recorded in Step 1. Step 5:Calibrate the Timing:Use the ECAP "Monitor/Calibrate Timing" screen to calibrate the Timing (refer to P-514: Calibration/Adjustment: Step 10 Through Step 12).Reprogramming Used Electronic Control Modules
In extreme circumstances, (when a new ECM replacement is not available) you may have to remove an ECM from an engine that is not in service. If the ECM to be used is not the same
