Information:
The rotor should be resting in the exact position that the rotor was in before the bearing was changed. If the rotor has moved up or If the bearing has moved down, the downward pressure of the upper bearing has changed.Preload is created by a wave spring washer assembly that is found internal to the upper bearing cartridge.The correct amount of pressure is exerted when the wave spring washer is compressed 1.02 mm (0.040 inch). Two methods for verifying the preload:
Verifying preload by comparing bearing heights
Compare the stamped bearing height to the distance in the flywheel at the location in which the two surfaces mate.
Measure the difference. The difference should be 1.02 mm (0.040 inch).
Verifying unrestricted travel of the bearing
Install the upper bearing without the O-ring.
Measure the depth from the face of the bearing cartridge to the upper retainer bolt.
Measure the location of the bearing with four feeler gauges.
Record the measurements.
Remove the eight 5/16-inch socket cap bolts. Using the star pattern, loosen the bolts one quarter turn at a time.
Measure the depth from the face of the bearing cartridge to the upper retainer bolt. Make sure that the measurements are made in the same places as the measurements are made in step 2.
Compare the two readings and ensure that there has been bearing travel due to the preload wave spring washer.
Record the measurement.
Remove the upper bearing.Install the upper bearing with the O-ring.
Lubricate the O-ring.
Place the O-ring in the proper position.
