(1) Cover (2) Dashpot adjustment screw (3) Rear cover assembly
Remove cover (1) from the rear of the governor.
The dashpot adjustment screw has an orifice in the center. Determine if the orifice in the dashpot adjustment screw (2) is plugged or if the screw has backed out. Clean the orifice with a 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) or smaller wire, if necessary. Reinstall the adjustment screw. Tighten the adjustment screw. Stake the adjustment screw in order to secure the screw. Do not use thread lock compound to secure the adjustment screw. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Step 5.
Remove rear cover assembly (3) from the governor.

(4) Spring seat
Remove the governor spring seat (4). Add one shim onto the front side of the spring seat. Reassemble the governor. Operate the engine at low idle in order to determine if the problem has been resolved. If the problem is still present, add an additional shim and check the engine performance again. If the problem is resolved, operate the engine until the normal operating temperature is reached. Reset the low idle and reset the high idle. If the problem is not resolved proceed to the Step 7.Note: A maximum of three shims may be installed.

(5) Shutoff Assembly
Check the serial number from the Governor Information Plate. If the serial number for the governor is less than 100,000, install an improved shutoff assembly (5). Refer to Service Manual, SENR6454, "3114, 3116 & 3126 Engine Governors".
Check the governor for the following conditions:
Servo that is binding
Tight pivot shaft in the bearing block
Swivel that is binding
Sleeve that is binding
Plugged oil passages to the servo pistonReplace the governor if repairs do not resolve the problem and all other systems have been thoroughly checked.
