Information:
You can update the former 395-4220 Flexible Coupling Gp (5) to the new configuration. Replace slotted coupler cover (6) with solid cover plate (2). Discard the bolts and washers that you remove from the flexible coupler group. Use the parts in Table 1 to upgrade former flexible coupling group (5). Torque the eight bolts (3) to 460 60 N m (339 44 lb ft).Premature failures of the adapter group bearings have been reported. Indicators of bearing failures are:
Unusual noise
Unusual shudder
Unusual vibration
Looseness of the coupling output shaft
Large amounts of grease on the drive shaft guard at the adapter group output
Large amounts of grease on the inside coupling seen through inspection screens on the adapter group housing
Paint discoloration on the adapter group housing due to heat buildupFailure of the adapter group bearings results in additional radial and axial movements of the drive shaft. An inspection procedure for the adapter group bearings is available. Use the following inspection procedure to check the condition of the adapter group bearings.
Continuing to operate the engine with this additional drive shaft movement quickly results in damage to surrounding components creating the potential of a fire. Extended machine downtime may be experienced. For trucks equipped with fire suppression, Caterpillar recommends consultation with the fire-suppression provider to ensure appropriate coverage in this area of the truck.Immediately stop the machine and shut down the engine if an unusual shudder or vibration is felt. Regularly inspect the adapter group as part of the operator beginning of shift walk around. Replace the bearings inside the adapter group when signs of bearing failure are detected. Use the following procedure as a reference:
Inspection Procedure
Inform the operators of the 795F AC machine that shudder or vibration heard and felt must result in stopping the machine and immediately shutting down the engine. Prepare the machine for maintenance. For the correct procedure, refer to the above listed information. After the engine is shut down, and the machine is safe for inspection and service, visually inspect the adapter group before starting the machine again.
Visually check the drive shaft guard and surrounding components for damage from additional radial and axial movement of the drive shaft.
Complete again the adapter group check listed below before restarting the machine.

View from ground looking up, showing grease on the drive shaft guard.
With the engine shutdown, inspect the adapter group prior to every shift start.
Check for signs of grease spraying onto the drive shaft guard at the output.
Check for evidence of grease on the bottom outer surface of the adapter group housing.
Use a flashlight to check for signs of grease on the coupling.
Check for signs of paint discoloration on the adapter group.
