The Caterpillar Electronic Ignition System (EIS) provides precision spark control for each cylinder. The ignition system also provides detonation protection for the engine. The ignition system consists of three basic components: control module, ignition transformers and various sensors. For more information on this control, refer to the "General Information" section. Refer to table 1 for related service literature for gas engines that are equipped with the EMCP II+.

The Gas Engine Control Module (GECM) is based on the ADEM3 diesel engine controller. The GECM provides precision spark control for each cylinder. The GECM controls the fuel delivery through the gas control valve. The GECM controls the crank and rest cycle of the starter motor. The GECM monitors engine sensor parameters. The GECM also logs all engine events and diagnostics.The GECM schematic shows the interface between the Generator Set Control (GSC+) and the GECM. The GSC+ reads engine parameter information from the GECM over the Cat DataLink. The GSC+ also reads engine diagnostics from the GECM over the Cat DataLink. The GSC+ setpoint P023, "Engine Type", must be set to 2 (EUI) in order to enable this critical data link communication. If it is set to any other choice, the GSC+ will not receive the engine parameter information and the engine will shutdown.The GSC+ provides switched battery power to the GECM through RM-1. This powers the GECM when the ECS switch is in any position other than OFF/RESET (unless the pin 6 to pin 9 jumper is used on the ECS switch). The engine is started whenever the ECS switch is turned to the RUN position or a remote start initiate signal is received while the ECS is in "AUTO" mode. The GSC+ provides a start signal to the GECM through the Electronic Governor Relay (EGR). The EGR is part of the relay module. Relay module contacts RM-13 and RM-14 are used in order provide the the start signal to the GECM. Once the start signal is provided to the GECM, the GECM controls the cranking sequence.Note: The crank duration setpoints on the GSC+ and the GECM must be matched exactly in order to avoid unintentional shutdown of the engine.Note: The GSC+ controls the engine cooldown. Set the GECM cooldown time to zero seconds. Set the GSC+ cooldown time to the desired cooldown duration.Note: The GSC+ controls the "Overcrank Event". Set the GECM "Overcrank Event Time" to its maximum of 6 minutes. Set the GSC+ "Overcrank Time" to the desired duration.
