Component Code: 1929SUBJECT: Transmission and Torque Converter Temperature Sensor Replacement
PROBLEM:
Failures have been reported on the 118-7226 Temperature Sensor. Claim Reports show that the 118-7226 Temperature Sensor is sometimes being replaced because the transmission is running "HOT".
The 118-7226 Temperature Sensor is used to perform the following tasks:
Measure the transmission oil sump temperature
Make adjustments in the Power Train ECM in order to provide optimum transmission and torque converter operation
The output from the 118-7226 Temperature Sensor is not displayed on the Quad Gage Panel or any other panel. The output of the 118-7226 Temperature Sensor is used only to generate a fault code.
The "Torque Converter Out" gage on the Quad Gage receives its input from the 4W-9972 Temperature Sensor and the 145-7028 Temperature Sensor.
SOLUTION:
Based on this information, Caterpillar Electronics has concluded that there is some confusion with the operation of the 118-7226 Temperature Sensor. Attached is a form requesting additional information on repairs made for transmission oil temperature overheating. We are requesting this information on repairs made only until OCTOBER 31, 2003.
