Remove water pumps.
Remove oil pump.
Remove vibration damper.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 1 g00561379Note: The same procedure is use for removing the idler gears and the shafts on both sides. The gears on each side are different. The gears must be installed on the correct side in order to get the correct engagement with the crankshaft gear.
Remove the four bolts that hold shaft (2) in place. Note: DO NOT allow the gear to fall when the shaft is removed.
Install two 3/8 inch forcing screws in shaft (2).
Support gear (1). Tighten the forcing screws evenly. Remove shaft (2) from the front housing.
Remove gear (1) from the front housing.

Remove O-ring seals (3) from shaft (2).
Illustration 3 g00561405Note: The idler bearing in the illustration shows a groove for an internal oil supply. The new idler bearings do not have a groove for an internal oil supply.
If necessary, remove bearing (4) from gear (1).

Remove thrust washer (5) from the front housing. Installation Procedure
Install gear group (front) in the reverse order of removal.

If bearing (4) was removed, use Tooling (A) in order to install the bearing in gear (1). Install the bearing until dimension (X) is 2.5 0.5 mm (0.098 0.020 inch). The inside diameter of bearing (4) should be 69.987 0.040 mm (2.7554 0.0016 inch) after installation.
Use Tooling (B) in order to check the backlash between the crankshaft gear and gear (1). The backlash should be 0.051 to 0.533 mm (0.0020 to 0.0209 inch).
Use Tooling (B) in order to check the end play of gear (1). The end play should be 0.25 to 0.85 mm (0.010 to 0.033 inch).
