Information:
Operation Description:Use this procedure if the starting motor remains engaged after starting the engine.Note: The engine must be equipped with an electric starting motor.Test Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect all of the connectors that are associated with the circuit.Expected Result:All connectors, pins and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Status Control Module (SCM) for Diagnostic Fault Codes
Turn the main disconnect switch to the ON position.
Check the SCM display for any diagnostic fault codes. Expected Result:There are no active diagnostic fault codes. Results:
OK - There are no active diagnostic fault codes. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - There are active diagnostic fault codes.Repair: Proceed to the appropriate procedure in Troubleshooting .STOPTest Step 3. Check the Voltage at the SCM
Shut down the engine.
Check the voltage between terminal 25 and the −Battery at the SCM.
Start the engine.Expected Result:The voltage is at least 15 VDC. The starting motor remains engaged. Results:
OK - The voltage is at least 15 VDC. The starting motor remains engaged. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The starting motor does not remain engaged.Repair: Check the set point for the crank terminate. Proceed to Testing and Adjusting, "Setpoint Programming".If the set point is OK, proceed to Troubleshooting, "01 dIAG".If the speed sensor is OK, replace the SCM.STOP
NOT OK - The voltage is less than 1 VDC. The starting motor remains engaged. Repair: Proceed to Testing and Adjusting, "Starting Motor Magnetic Switch - Test".Troubleshoot the pinion solenoid and troubleshoot the starting motor. If necessary, repair components or replace components.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 4. Check the Voltage at the SCM
Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the wire from terminal 25 at the SCM.
Turn the main disconnect switch to the ON position. Start the engine.Expected Result:The engine does not crank. Results:
OK - The engine does not crank. Repair: Check the voltage between terminal 25 and the −Battery at the SCM. If the voltage is still above 15 VDC, remove electrical power from the SCM and check the resistance between terminal W and terminal 25 at the SCM.If the resistance is below five Ohms, proceed to Testing And Adjusting, "Relay Module - Test".STOP
NOT OK - The engine continues to crank.Repair: Proceed to Testing and Adjusting, "Starting Motor Magnetic Switch - Test".Troubleshoot the pinion solenoid and troubleshoot the starting motor. If necessary, repair components or replace components.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
