There are no longer electronic controls (control modules or relays). The wiring to the compression brake is standard in the 3176B wiring harness. The wiring passes into the valve cover base. The wiring then passes through the J5/P5 connector. The wires are secured inside the valve cover base if the engine is not equipped with compression brakes.

143-6620     Engine Brake Switch    The current electronic control wiring and switches must be removed from the cab if the engine is equipped with compression brakes. A new ON/OFF switch and a new LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH braking switch must be installed in the cab. Refer to Table 5 for the part numbers of the switches.The ECM requires two switch inputs in order to control the operation of the compression brake. A LOW/HIGH wire must be installed from the OEM Harness Connector of the Wiring Harness Adapter to the switch in the cab for LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH braking. A MEDIUM/HIGH wire must be installed from the OEM Harness Connector of the Wiring Harness Adapter to the switch in the cab for LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH braking. A wire must be installed from the switch for LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH braking through the ON/OFF switch to ground. Refer to Illustration 4 and Illustration 5 for wiring of the compression brake.Note: It may be necessary to install an additional relay in the switch circuit for the compression brake if the vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). The additional relay allows the ABS system to turn off the retarder. The contacts of the relay must be normally closed. The ABS system can not turn on the retarder. The Caterpillar ECM must activate the retarder.Other Options
