Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Apply clean engine oil to the cylinder liner bore, to the piston rings, and to the outer surface of the piston.Note: Be careful not to damage the cylinder liners and/or the crankshaft journals during the installation of the pistons and the connecting rods.
Use Tooling (A) to install piston (2) and the connecting rod in the cylinder liner.

Typical Example
The connecting rod and the piston must be installed in the engine with Surface (X) toward the crankshaft main bearing journal. Surface (Y) must face Surface (Y) of adjacent connecting rod.Note: Surface (X) is thicker than Surface (Y).Note: Surface (X) is chamfered to fit the crankshaft.

Install the bearings and bearing caps.
Apply clean engine oil to the threads of nuts (1). Install nuts (1).
Tighten nuts (1) to a torque of 82 8 N m (60 6 lb ft). Turn nuts (1) by an additional 120° 5°.Installation Procedure for In-Line Blocks

Use Tooling (A) to install piston (2) and the connecting rod in the cylinder liner.

Install the bearings and bearing caps.Note: Insure that the bearing tabs are on the same side as the oil jet tube.
Apply clean engine oil to bolts (1). Install bolts (1).
Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 90 8 N m (66 6 lb ft). Turn bolts (1) by an additional 90° 5°.End By:
Install the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove and Install".
Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
