Probable Causes
Lack of fuel
Check for diagnostic codes.
Theft deterrent system
Aftermarket engine protection devices (if equipped)
Air inlet shutoff (if equipped)
Flash file
Speed/timing sensors
Fuel quality

Check the Fuel Level
Verify that there is fuel in the fuel tank. Add fuel, if necessary.Check for Diagnostic Codes Related to the Injectors.
If a diagnostic code is present, verify that a stream of oil is striking the injector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid - Test".Check the Theft Deterrent System
If the display screen on Messenger indicates that the theft deterrent is enabled, passwords must be entered before the engine will start.Check the Aftermarket Engine Protection Devices
Check the aftermarket engine protection devices (if equipped). These devices usually interrupt power to the ECM.Check the Air Inlet Shutoff System
If the engine was shut down due to the air inlet shutoff system, the air inlet shutoff must be manually reset.Check the Flash File
Verify that the flash file is correct for the engine displacement. The engine will not start if the flash file is incorrect. For example, a C9 engine will not start if a C7 flash file has been programmed into the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install".Check the Engine Speed/Timing Sensors
The engine will not start and there will be no codes if both speed/timing sensors are disconnected. Verify that both speed/timing sensors are connected.Check for these codes:
190-8 Engine Speed : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period
637-11 Engine Timing Sensor : Other Failure Mode
723-8 Engine Speed Sensor #2 : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or PeriodTroubleshoot the codes if the codes are present. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed - Test".Check the Fuel Quality
Check the fuel quality. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on fuel quality. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for the correct procedure for testing the quality of the fuel.Check the Fuel System
Check the fuel system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test".
