Inspect the piston for the following weaknesses: sharp edges, nicks, gouges and dirt. Smooth any rough edges. Remove any dirt.
Coat the oval expander and the piston ring with hydraulic oil.
Stretch the expander ring over the piston. Place the expander ring in the piston ring groove. Do not use tools with sharp edges for this step. Do not twist the oval expander ring. The oval expander ring must lie flat in the piston ring groove.
Before installing the piston ring on the piston, place the piston ring into the bore. The ends of the piston ring are designed to overlap. The ends of the piston rings are designed to provide an interference fit. Do not cut the piston rings.
Place the piston ring over the piston. Expand the piston ring in order to fit the piston ring over the piston. Excessive stretching of the piston ring will weaken the piston ring.
Check the bore and the chamfer in the cylinder. The bore and the chamfer should be free of nicks and gouges.
Lubricate the cylinder bore with hydraulic oil.
Install the piston into the cylinder bore. Locate the joint on the piston ring opposite the supply port for the cylinder. During assembly, the piston ring must remain in the piston ring groove.
