Introduction
This Special Instruction explains the procedure that is used to set the brake light switch to the ON position and the OFF position when the service brake foot pedals are applied on the machines that are listed.Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication, until you understand the information that is contained in this document. After the modifications have been made prepare the machine for service. Follow the procedures in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your machine.The special instruction is available through the normal literature distribution system. The publication can be found on the Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS).Machine Preparation
Position the machine on level ground. The machine should be moved away from other operating machines and away from personnel.
Adjust the position of the bucket so the bucket is parallel to the ground. Lower the bucket or the blade to the ground.
Engage the parking brake. Shut off the engine.
Install the steering frame lock link.Test
The procedure requires two people.Make sure that the service brake foot pedals operate smoothly. The service brake foot pedals should be free of obstructions.
Turn the engine key start switch to the ON position.

(1) Stop pin. (2) Plug. (3) Adjustment screw.
Place a 3.5 mm (.14 inch) shim under the right foot pedal on stop pin (1). The brake lights should turn on. Remove the shim. Place a 1.5 mm (.06 inch) shim under the right foot pedal on stop pin (1). The brake lights should be off.
If the conditions in Step 2 are not satisfactory, proceed to ""Procedure"".Procedure
The procedure requires two people.
Place the 3.5 mm (.14 inch) under the right foot pedal on stop pin (1) .
Remove access plug (2) from the base of the left foot pedal in order to access adjustment screw (3) .
If the brake lights are OFF go to Step 4. If the brake lights are ON then turn adjustment screw (3) counterclockwise, until the brake lights are OFF.
Slowly turn adjustment screw (3) clockwise until the brake lights come on. Remove the shim.
Place the 1.5 mm (.06 inch) shim under the right foot pedal on stop pin (1). The brake lights should be OFF. If the brake lights are ON repeat Steps 1 through 5.
Remove the shim from stop pin (1) .
Install access plug (2) .
Operate the service brake foot pedals in order to verify that the brake lights are functioning properly.
