Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
The Front drive shaft bearing lip seals may fail on the machines listed above. The seals may have been installed in the improper orientation, which can result in the inability of the grease to purge from the bearing assembly. This can lead to bearing noise, overheating of bearings or dislodging of the lip seal.Solution
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent solution has not been identified. As an interim action, follow the below procedure:

(A) 2D-8540 Lip Type Seal (or) 6K-2430 Lip Type Seal
Check around 2D-8540 Lip Type Seal (A) or 6K-2430 Lip Type Seal (A) to ensure that the grease is being purged from the seals.Inspect further for the following conditions:
If no grease is found to purge from either seal during greasing.
If excessive amount of grease flows easily out from one side in a case of a dislodged seal.
The seals are to be installed with the springs towards the outside, exposed to the atmosphere. If found with the springs inward toward the grease, replace the seals with same part number.
