Move transmission control lever (1) to NEUTRAL.
Push down on parking brake control lever (2) and engage the parking brake .
Move implement control levers (4) to the HOLD position.
Push governor control lever (5) forward through the stop engine detent. Then, return the control lever to the LOW IDLE position.
Turn engine start switch key (4) to the ON position.
The engine oil pressure, coolant flow, and the indicator lights (3) for the battery charge should come on.
Turn engine start switch key (4) to START.
Inject starting aid (ether) while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.Use sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Use ether for cold starting purposes only.After 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.
Push ether starting aid knob (7) inward and then release the knob. When the ether starting knob is released, a premeasured amount of ether is injected into the engine air filter.
Use additional ether starting fluid at every two seconds until the engine starts.
Release start switch key (6) when the engine starts.
Use the ether starting aid at every two seconds after the engine starts until the engine runs smoothly.For starting the engine at temperatures below −18°C (0°F), additional cold weather starting aids are recommended: A jacket water heater, fuel heater and extra battery capacity.At temperatures below −23°C (−10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. In order to start the engine in cold weather, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations For All Caterpillar Equipment".
