Fuel System
Clean Primary Filter
Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Clean the primary element when the engine has a loss of power or the exhaust smoke is black.1. Stop the engine and close the fuel shutoff valve. 2. Loosen the bolt on top of the filter base.3. Remove the filter housing and element.4. Wash the base and the element in clean, nonflammable solvent.5. Replace the filter base gasket if it is damaged.6. Install the filter element and housing. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 24 4 N m (18 3 lb ft).7. Open the fuel shutoff valve. Prime the fuel system. See "Priming the Fuel System."8. Start the engine and inspect for leaks. If the engine has a loss of power or the exhaust smoke is still black, change the secondary filters.Change Secondary Filters
1. Remove the filter elements from the base. Discard the used elements.2. Clean the filter housing base. Make sure all of the old seal is removed.3. Lubricate the sealing surfaces of the new filter elements with clean diesel fuel.4. Install the filters by hand. Tighten the filters until the sealing surfaces contacts the base. Tighten the elements an additional 3/4 turn. There are rotation index marks on each filter, spaced 90° (1/4 turn) apart. Use these as a guide when tightening the filters.5. Prime the fuel system. See "Priming the Fuel System" below.Priming the Fuel System
1. Unlock the priming pump plunger and operate the pump.2. When there is a strong resistance to the operation of the pump plunger, lock the plunger.3. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.4. If the engine will not start or continues to misfire or smokes, further priming is necessary. If the engine is stopped, use the fuel priming pump to supply fuel to the injection lines. 5. With the engine running, loosen the fuel line nuts at the injector inlets, one at a time, several times in succession. Allow the fuel to run until free of air bubbles.6. Tighten the fuel line nuts to 40 7 N m (30 5 lb ft).Fuel Tank Cap and Fill Screen
Wash Cap and Screen
1. Remove the fuel tank cap.2. Inspect the cap gasket. Replace the gasket if it is damaged. 3. Remove the screen.4. Disassemble the cap.5. Wash all the parts in clean, nonflammable solvent.6. Lightly oil the element. Assemble the cap.7. Install the screen, the retaining snap ring and the cap.Engine Crankcase Breathers
Clean
The engine crankcase brearhers are located on the right side of the machine, under the engine compartment hood. 1. Stop the engine. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the hose from the breather.2. Loosen the breather retaining clamp bolt.3. Remove the clamp and the breather.4. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent. 5. Install the breather and clamp. Tighten the clamp.6. Reconnect the hose and clamp to the breather. Tighten hose clamp.7. Remove and clean the breather on the other side of the engine, using
