The oil cooler bypass valve is installed in the lines that connect the oil cooler to the steering pump. The bypass valve is open during start-up and during conditions when the oil is cold. The bypass valve is set to close at approximately 65 °C (149 °F).The bypass valve protects the cooler. The bypass valve opens if the pressure differential between the cooler inlet and the cooler outlet is greater than 620 kPa (90 psi).

Relief valve (3) maintains a back pressure of 620 kPa (90 psi). Part of the return oil flows through inlet (5) to the oil cooler. The larger part of the return oil flows through outlet (7) to the tank. The bypass valve opens quickly in order to relieve the increases (surges) of flow of the return oil. The bypass valve keeps pressure increases (spikes) from the oil cooler.
