Adjustment Procedure
1. Install the bearings on pinion (1), then install the pinion in the carrier. The pinion must be in a vertical position.2. Assemble the cage (4) to the carrier. Use only one-half the quantity of bolts, with one bolt in every second hole around the cage. Do not install seal (5) in cage (4) until after the adjustment is complete, and do not install all the bolts in cage (4) until after the seal is installed.3. Tighten the bolts evenly around the cage (4) to keep the clearance between the cage and carrier the same all around as nearly as possible, and turn the pinion at the same time, until the pinion bearings have enough preload so that a torque of more than 4.0 N m (35 lb in) is necessary to turn the pinion.4. Turn the pinion several revolutions under this preload, then measure the gap as an indication of the amount of shims needed.5. Remove cage (4), but do not turn the pinion.6. Install shims (8) as needed between cage (4) and the carrier to adjust the preload on the pinion bearings until a torque of 4.0 0.6 N m (35 5 lb in) is necessary to turn the pinion. If cage (4) must be removed again to add or remove shims, do not turn pinion while cage is removed.7. When the pinion bearing adjustment is correct, install seal (5) in cage (4), then install all the bolts in the cage and tighten the bolts to the correct torque.8. Assemble gears (9) in the differential case, then turn the gears. The torque needed to turn the gears must not be more than 35 N m (25 lb ft).9. Install the differential assembly in the carrier.10. Install bearing caps (3) and (7) and the nuts, but do not tighten the nuts to the torque specification at this time.11. Put the carrier in a position with the axle centerline vertical and the teeth of ring gear (6) up, as in the illustration.12. Turn adjusting ring (10) until there is a backlash of 0.41 0.13 mm (.016 .005") between the pinion (1) and ring gear (6).13. Fasten a dial indicator to the differential assembly, with the contact point of the indicator against bearing cap (3) so the indicator will measure any change to dimension (A).
Adjustment of differential gears and bearing preload.14. Turn adjusting ring (2) to increase the preload on the carrier bearings until dimension (A) increases 0.64 to 0.76 mm (.025 to .030").15. Turn the ring gear several revolutions in each direction.16. Turn adjusting ring (2) to decrease dimension (A) until the dial indicator is back to zero. Turn the adjusting ring the other direction to increase dimension (A) again to 0.51 0.05 mm (.020 .002"). Turn the ring gear several revolutions while this adjusting ring is turned.17. Check the backlash again, and adjust if necessary. If backlash adjustment is necessary, turn both adjusting rings (10) and (2) exactly the same
