Batteries discharge highly explosive hydrogen gas and they can explode and shower you with sulfuric acid if a spark is created near the battery. Batteries can also cause burn injuries when a ring or a watch completes a circuit between the positive battery post and the frame of the machine. To prevent injuries always remove all rings and watches and wear safety glasses while work is done on or near the batteries. Use extra caution not to cause sparks near the battery. Disconnect the ground cable first and connect it last.
1. Lockout the electrical system of the machine with the key that is located at the left side of the engine compartment. 2. Loosen bolts (2) that holds the negative battery cable assembly (1) to the batteries.3. Loosen bolts (4) that holds the positive battery cable assembly (3) to the batteries.4. Remove self locking nuts (6) and the washers that secure hold down (5) to the rods. Remove hold down (5) from the rods and the batteries.5. Use two people, a lifting sling and a hoist to remove the batteries from the battery box. The weight of each battery is 54 kg (119 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the batteries. 6. Use two people, a lifting sling and a hoist to position the batteries to the battery box.7. Position hold down (5) to the rods and the batteries.8. Install self locking nuts (6) and the washers in order to secure hold down (5) to the rods. Tighten self locking nuts (6) to a torque of 20 4 N m (15 3 lb ft).9. Install positive battery cable assembly (3) to the batteries.10. Install negative battery cable assembly (1) to the batteries.11. Tighten battery cable bolts (2) and (4) to a torque of 7.2 1.4 N m (5.3 1.00 lb ft). Install the rubber boots over the terminals.
