Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Install O-ring seal (16) to retarder housing (11) .

Install O-ring seal (15) to torque converter (14) .

Attach Tooling (B) , a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to retarder housing (11) . Position retarder housing (11) to torque converter (14) .
Install bolts (13) that secure retarder housing (11) to torque converter (14) . Tighten bolts (13) to a torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft). Remove Tooling (B) from retarder housing (11) .

Attach two eyebolts (9) to rotor (10) . Use a hoist in order to install rotor (10) to retarder housing (11) .

Install stator (7) to the retarder housing. Install bolts (6) that secure stator (7) to the retarder housing.

Install bolt (3) , spacer (2) and spider (1) to the retarder. Tighten bolt (3) to a torque of 120 15 N m (89 11 lb ft) .
Attach Tooling (A) , a nylon lifting strap and a hoist to retarder hydraulic control valve (5) .
Position hydraulic control valve (5) to the retarder. Install three bolts (4) that secure retarder hydraulic control valve (5) to the retarder. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 40 8 N m (30 6 lb ft) .End By: Install the torque converter and retarder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter and Retarder - Install".
