Speed Sensor
Prior to replacement of the sensor, ensure that the sensor has failed. Check the connection to the sensor. Measure the voltage between the contacts of the sensor. Check for metal shavings on the magnetic tip or the gear teeth.Perform the following procedure in order to replace the speed sensor.Note: Refer to Articulated Truck Power Train Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3448, "Speed Sensor (Transmision) - Remove and Install" for additional information.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the machine harness connector from the sensor and remove the sensor.
By hand, install the new sensor into the housing of the gear until the sensor contacts the gear tooth.
Set the air gap of the sensor to 0.89 mm (0.035 inch). The air gap is set by turning the sensor 180 degrees in the counterclockwise direction. For the output speed sensors, the air gap is preset.
Tighten the sensor to 25 5 N m (18 4 lb ft). Tighten the output speed sensors to 28 7 N m (21 5 lb ft).
Inspect the sensor connector of the machine harness. Connect the machine harness to the sensor.
Verify that the sensor corrects the problem.
